So what are financial planners advising people to invest in? Stocks and bonds are the best known investments and are important to any savings plan. Instruments like savings accounts and certificates of deposit pay a small rate of interest. They carry little risk. Annuities are another savings instrument with low risk. Financial planner Pete D’Arruda says “Worldwide, people can put their money in annuities, which are basically savings accounts offered by insurance companies.” But he says it is important to make a decision about an annuity with a good financial planner. He warns that annuity agreements can be complex, and many bad ones are out there. Pete D’Arruda says good planning means placing money into financial securities and accounts that have different risk levels, using asset allocation. “So true asset allocation is having some in stocks, some in bonds, some in mutual funds, but then some in other places with guaranteed income and then safety and liquidity kind of accounts for emergencies.” This method of savings follows the old saying you should not “put all your eggs in one basket.” But that is not for everyone. Public Retirement Benefits, Options for the Future

In this 15-minute video, LAO State Finance Director Jason Sisney describes why public employee retirement costs have risen substantially in recent years for California governments and the Legislature’s options for creating new types of retirement benefits for future state and local employees. What will senior centers of the future be like?

They’ll be resources for a new stage in life — not for retiring from life or work. The age range will be wider, spanning 50 years — people in their 50s up to 100 or older. There will be more younger seniors. The hours will be longer — evening and weekend hours will be in demand as people work past retirement age but want the services. There’ll be more courses and programs — new trends in exercise, fitness fashions, brain games for mental stimulation, work issues, financial planning, travel. Centers will work with other community groups to offer educational programs. Some may now be competitors — retirement communities and assisted living, colleges and universities, adult education, churches and synagogues. Younger seniors will want the latest computer programs, but they’ll also appreciate the wisdom of the elders — the chance to learn disappearing arts like caning or quilting. Parent care will be a huge issue. More people in their 60s will have parents in their 90s. They will be multilingual, multicultural. Fewer senior centers will be freestanding. They will be a part of a community center or a library, etc.
