CCRCs Offer Opportunities to Build New Relationships and Social Connections with Like-Minded People, According to Senior Living Report Commissioned by Vi

Chicago IL (PRWEB) January 31, 2012

A new report by renowned gerontologist Ken Dychtwald Ph.D. challenges the popular myth that ones current home is the best option to continue an active social life and stay connected during post retirement years.

The reality is that that remaining in your home can result in growing isolation and loneliness in later life, said Dychtwald, psychologist, gerontologist, best-selling author and CEO of Age Wave. Senior living options, like a continuing care retirement community (CCRC), offer opportunities to create new friendships and social connections.

Titled Five Myths and Realities of Continuing Care Retirement Communities, Age Waves report and supporting research were commissioned by Vi, a developer, owner and operator of older adult living communities. The document is available in its entirety at Vi Living.

According to the report, friendships and close social connections are an essential source of happiness, and people age 60 and over are most likely to cite living family and friends as extremely important to their happiness more important than money or even health.

Yet, the report says, it is not uncommon for people who stay in their current home during post retirement to find that their friends and family move away, and many can feel increasingly lonely or isolated in their current home. Studies show that having low social interaction is as bad for your health as smoking fifteen cigarettes a day, is as dangerous as being an alcoholic, is as harmful as never exercising, and is twice as dangerous as obesity.

According to the report, residents of CCRCs say that it is the opportunity to meet, learn from, and engage in new activities with positive, stimulating, like-minded people that can make life brighter and fuller.

Said one interviewee in the report: The No. 1 benefit is that youre surrounded by successful, interesting people. You have a pretty good chance of finding people who may make an impact on your life.

In addition, the report said, residents often describe the staff as an extended family, which, together with visits from family and opportunities to meet family members of other residents, helps to create a dynamic, multigenerational social environment.

CCRCs offer independent living with a combination of a private residence, services, amenities and care (for example, assisted living, memory support care and skilled nursing care).

MissionIR News – AdCare Health Systems Announces Acquisition of Skilled Nursing and Assisted Living Center for $12.5 Million

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) January 04, 2012

MissionIR would like to highlight AdCare Health Systems, Inc. (NYSE Amex: ADK). AdCare Health Systems is an expanding national leader in the development, ownership, and management of assisted living facilities, skilled nursing and retirement communities. The company’s 3,600 employees provide high-quality care for patients and residents residing in the 44 facilities that it operates.

In the companys news yesterday,

AdCare Health Systems announced the completion of the previously announced agreement to purchase a skilled nursing and assisted living community in Ohio. The final purchase price totaled $ 12.5 million, $ 1.0 million less than the initial purchase agreement.

The community has 179 beds in service and generates approximately $ 12 million in gross annualized revenues according to its most recent financials. The addition of this skilled nursing and assisted living center is expected to be immediately accretive to AdCares earnings.

This transaction brings the total number of facilities AdCares purchased, leased, or managed to 44 facilities since its M&A campaign began in the fall of 2009, with more than 3,900 beds in service.

The company told investors that it intends to continue pursuing an aggressive M&A program. Combining its current annualized run-rate with transactions in the process of closing, AdCares estimated annualized revenue run-rate is expected to exceed $ 300 million. This would represent an increase of more than 460% over the companys revenues in 2010, and an increase of more than 11 times revenues since initiating its M&A campaign in the fall of 2009.

After expanding our operations to Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, North Carolina and Oklahoma, with this acquisition weve built upon our home base in Ohio, stated Chris Brogdon, AdCares vice chairman and chief acquisitions officer. These new facilities will leverage the professional support staff weve long maintained in the state, as well as enhance our overall economies of scale.

Were continuing to evaluate a number of attractive opportunities in the Midwest, as well as in the Southwest and Southeast with our M&A program and the integration of new facilities remaining our primary focus going forward, continued Brogdon.

Boyd P. Gentry, AdCares president and chief executive officer, stated, Our strategy of acquiring skilled nursing facilities is proving highly successful, not only in our closing rate and terms, but especially in our post-acquisition performance. We have been targeting facilities that have not traditionally concentrated on providing post-acute services, and then once acquired, we increase Medicare census and occupancy, as well as optimize reimbursement and patient care.

Historically, it takes our operations team a year to 15 months to fully harvest this opportunity in an individual facility, added Boyd. This means we still have optimization opportunities in our current portfolio, and significant upside exists in our pending acquisition pipeline.

AdCare finished last year with 29 new facilities placed under contract, and the acquisition of 18 facilities completed. The company expects to complete the acquisition of at least 20 more in the next three months, including five facilities in Oklahoma and the companys largest transaction to-date of 15 facilities across the Southeast.

Renowned Gerontologist Ken Dychtwald Challenges Myths That May Mislead People Into Making Wrong Decisions About Best Options in Senior Living

Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) December 08, 2011

Ken Dychtwald Ph.D., today challenged five prevailing myths and misperceptions about the senior living concept known as the continuing care retirement community, or CCRC. Dychtwald, psychologist, gerontologist, best-selling author, and CEO of Age Wave, expressed his comments in a new report presented today at Vi at Silverstone, a Vi and Plaza Companies Community.

There are prevailing myths and misperceptions about CCRCs which do not match todays realities, and which can sometimes complicate or mislead decision-making, according to Dychtwald. As a result, people planning for retirement may be missing out on one of the better options available in senior living today.

Dychtwald said, It is the reasons for and psychology behind these myths that can be the most revealing. Some of these myths arise from memories and images of old-fashioned retirement homes our parents or grandparents may have lived in. Others are grounded in deeper concerns we may have regarding how to best optimize our health and independence in later life.

Titled Five Myths and Realities of Continuing Care Retirement Communities, Age Waves report and supporting research were commissioned by Vi, a developer, owner and operator of older adult living communities. The document is available in its entirety at http://www.ViLiving.com.

Meg Ostrom, Vis senior vice president and project director, said the purpose behind the research that went into the report is to help those looking at retirement choices to better understand the psychology that is often behind the misperceptions, and the reality, of todays CCRC offerings.

Today, deciding to move to a CCRC is typically a pro-active decision to have an active, fulfilling lifestyle while at the same time preparing for future care needs, Ostrom said. This is not a reactive move triggered or forced by poor health or other event.

According to Dychtwald, the research uncovered five major myths:

Daystar Retirement Villages Assisted Living Program Passes State Survey With Flying Colors

West Seattle, WA (PRWEB) November 21, 2011

Daystar Retirement Village, a Seattle Retirement Community, is pleased to announce today that after the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) Annual Inspection, its Assisted Living program received no citations.

Daystar Retirement Villages Resident Services department is directed by Anetta Townsend, LPN and Glenda Specht, RN.

Wendy A. McGee, CEO of The Powell Companies says I am so proud of our care staff. This is a testament to their loving, compassionate and professional service to our residents. A citation-free survey does not necessarily mean perfection, but it is a remarkable achievement and tells us, Youre on the right path. Job well done. Hearing that from DSHS makes us extremely happy and encourages us to continue providing care above and beyond the state requirements.

The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) Annual Survey is an unannounced inspection of licensed boarding homes. The survey measures over 150 regulatory standards that assisted living communities must meet at all times and evaluates everything from nursing services to activities, dietary department, social services, administration, medical records, admissions and much more. The inspectors thoroughly assess our employees on the job, talk with the residents and review documents.
